A major engineering milestone has been achieved with the breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel, marking a transformative development in connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh by ensuring uninterrupted, all-weather access throughout the year.
The tunnel spans 13.15 kilometers at an altitude of 11,578 feet on National Highway 1. It connects Baltal near Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir with Minamarg near Drass in Ladakh, effectively bypassing the hazardous and snow-bound Zojila Pass, long known for its extreme weather conditions and frequent closures.
Once fully operational in 2028, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time from over an hour to just 15 minutes. It will provide reliable all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil, and Leh, significantly enhancing regional mobility while strengthening defense logistics and boosting tourism and trade in the region.

The project has been constructed by Megha Engineering under highly challenging conditions, including frequent avalanches and significant seismic risks. Advanced construction techniques were deployed to ensure safety and structural resilience in one of the most difficult terrains in the country. The project has also achieved a milestone of 10 million safe man-hours during its execution.
The breakthrough has been widely acknowledged by local voices, with Kargil activist Sajjad Kargili describing it as a generational dream fulfilled, reflecting the long-standing aspiration for dependable connectivity across the region.
The Zojila Tunnel stands as a strategic and infrastructural landmark, reshaping access between Kashmir and Ladakh and reinforcing economic, civilian, and defense integration across the Himalayas.
